Juicer
So, I bought a juicer and am thinking of that forty pound box of limes Mulk keeps talking about and a bottle of tequila. When I finish getting over this dam cold I might have to have some folks for margaritas. So far I have made grape, grapefruit, and apple juice from stuff that I just had in the fridge already. All of which where very tasty. Beyond that does anyone out there with a juicer have some ideas for interesting drinks? I have found recipes that call for some pretty interesting sounding stuff such as wheatgrass, cilantro, spinach, and various hard and soft fruits and veggies. But, I have never done this before and might want to try some recommended favorites of others before I get real experimental with it. |

Why the Oscars just are not relevant…
Just how is it that “The Really Boring Sounding Case of Benjies Back Door Button” gets 13 Oscar nods and Batman Returns gets one?? There is a reason no one watches them anymore. The Oscars are like our last president. Out of touch with the people. |

So I have this mental image right now of Congress talking to ‘The Big Three’ At some point Congress says to them, “We don’t know about that, we are going to have to go consult with our manager…” Then they leave ‘The Big Three’ sitting at a desk and all pile into an office on the other side of the room shutting the door behind them… Congress then waits long enough to really get ‘The Big Three’ sweating before coming out with a very different deal which is the best their manager said they could do…. Ha! |

Mumbai...
So, Mumbai is a long way from where I was in India. But dam... I was just there the other day. I even had a few conversations with Indians about these issues. Particularly about Pakistan. It was hard to avoid because they were playing them in Cricket while I was there. So, it was on every TV in every shop, bar, hotel, restaurant... There was no way to escape it. I found it very interesting how quickly Indians jumped to the "fact" at least according to them... That they could nuke Pakistan before Pakistan could even get their nukes off the ground. It was a bit sobering to hear... Perhaps that is not quite the correct sentiment... But still... The idea that they would jump to the nuclear option so quickly in a casual conversation was a bit startling... It brings to mind the idea of a country as an entity and the emotional development of that entity. Everyone has room to grow and we all have our faults but it seems the USA went through this phase of growth decades ago... It is not unlike the idea that many of the Muslim countries seem to be a few hundred years behind the west on social growth and development... I have some personal experience with this as my sister married a man from Lebanon and from what I have seen in practice, in the news and read about... it seems that treatment of females, social justice and religious development are a few hundred years behind the west. They just seem to be stuck in the dark ages. That is not to say the west is not full of its own problems. And I have huge issues with the predominant religion of the west... This is just an observation. |

In India people do not have questions. They have small doubts. I have addressed many small doubts while I have been here. Just a day and a half of working in Bangalore left to go. I am not looking forward to 25 hours of flying but I am looking forward to being able to eat normal foods again. The travel nurse told me not to eat any vegetables that had not been cooked. So, I could really go for a nice salad right about now. I must say that I really tried to come here with an open mind. But, I have no small doubts in my mind that I would really not want to come back here. You might could sell me on some other part of India. But, if I never see Bangalore again it will still be too soon. To be fair I should point out that the guys I have been working with here are all very nice and seem to truly be good people. But, to anyone who ever wanted to come here, don’t. It's illegal to dance here in Bangalore. Did I mention that? If you’re in a bar and the crowd starts to dance the music goes off and the lights come up. There does seem to be a "magic" sixty minutes where they break the law from 10:30 to 11:30PM. But of course, the bars and clubs stop serving at 11:30PM. They basically roll the city up and put a padlock on it. Add to that the fact that it is VERY expensive here or your are in absolute squalor with no in between. So it would really be nice if I never had to come back. I am in IT though. And now my group has a footprint here. So, it might be in the cards at some point in the future. |

India - WTFs
For a country who is staking its economy on being the technical outsourcing capital of the world they really do have some odd short comings. The phones here suck. I try to dial the same number ten times and get varying error messages or the phone just goes dead and never connects. Then on the 11th time of hitting redial (this isn’t a fat-finger issue) the call goes through. WTF The infrastructure here is in horrible shape. I didn’t get a picture of this because I didn’t want to offend the folks I was with but they tend to run their fiber, power, phone and assorted data cables through windows of buildings, hanging off of tree branches, and stretched over assorted obstacles in a way that is very alien. Or perhaps it looks more like a child set it up and is hoping Mommy isn’t going to make them clean it all up any time soon. Cap that off with the fact that the power goes out about six or seven times a day and you really start to wonder exactly how it seems to be a good idea to put your technical hub in this place. No matter how cheap the labor costs are. |

Things I will miss about India:I used to dismiss traditional Indian clothing as very hippie. I don’t like hippies. However, after being here for a few days I decided I liked it. The colors and patterns are very vivid and striking. The cloth flows around the woman in an almost organic way. The Indian head bobble. At first it confused me, and then it annoyed me. Now I have settled in on thinking it’s kind of cute. Loads of chicks driving motorcycles or riding side saddle on the back of bikes. Things I will not miss about India:The piles upon piles upon piles of rotting garbage. The smell. The large number of people. The fact that if things are supposed to be so dam cheap here then why the hell is everything so dam expensive!?!?! The beggars. Not being allowed to take me camera into some cool attraction. Working 12 hour days and only getting Saturday off. All of the torn down buildings that they never bothered to clean up. Meeting assholes businessmen who really think they are something important and brag to no end about how much money they make sending tech jobs from the US to India. The abject poverty. The fact that I can’t see my sweetie. |
